Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) jumped 2.8% to $28.36 after the search engine titan told investors it would press on with its planned sale of its stake in Chinese online retail giant Alibaba (NASDAQ:BABA) despite being unsure of the tax implications of the deal.
Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares ros 1.2% to $251.37 ahead of the much-anticipated rollout of its Model X sport utility vehicle (SUV).
Phoenix (NYSE:PNX) more than doubled to $32.80 after the life insurer agreed to be taken private by Nassau Reinsurance.
FALLERS
Cypress Semiconductor (NASDAQ:CY) wavered and was last down 0.6% at $8.31. The U.K.-based chipmaker said it ended its attempt to buy Atmel(NASDAQ:ATML). Shares of Atmel rose 0.4% to $8.00.
Synnex (NYSE:SNX) dropped 1.4% to $81.35 after the business process services company said its revenue for the August quarter fell 5.7%. The company also projected revenue below Wall Street estimates for the current period.
Reynolds American (NYSE:RAI) fell 0.1% to $43.42, erasing earliger gains of as high as $44.44. The second-largest U.S. tobacco company agreed to sell the international rights to its Natural American Spirit division to the Japan Tobacco Group of companies for $5.0bn in cash.
