Tesla shares struggle for direction ahead of Model X SUV launch

Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares struggled for direction on ahead of the much-anticipated rollout of its Model X sport utility vehicle (SUV).

The stock was trading up 0.2% at $248.89 at 1:07 p.m. in New York.

The electric car maker will host a special event in Fremont, California, at 11 p.m. EST to unveil the falcon-winged model, which is more than a year behind schedule.

The Model X is the third car in Tesla's lineup, following the Model S and the original Roadster.

The Model X will come with seating for six or seven, depending on how it’s configured, an automatically retracting rear spoiler, and parking sensors.

The car has what it calls “falcon wing” doors that open vertically and a 90 kilowatt-hour battery that is projected to have a range of roughly 402 kilometers per charge.

The Model X will be longer, taller and heavier than the Model S.

Earlier this month, chief executive officer Elon Musk tweeted the Model X will be available with the same options as the Model S, but will cost $5,000 more. The Model S starts at $75,000 in the United States.

The Model X will compete for customers with premium luxury SUVs that are largely made by German automakers, including the Audi Q7, the BMW X5 and the Porsche Cayenne.

The event takes place amid growing scrutiny of Volkswagen AG after admission that it cheated on emissions tests.

Tesla -- which promotes its Model S with the line “Zero Emissions. Zero Compromises.” -- may see a bounce from the growing scandal that has engulfed VW.
