Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) unveiled devices, including a new laptop called a Surface Book, as the world’s largest software maker continues its transformation into a mobile-phone and cloud computing business.
Shares rose 0.7% to $46.96 in New York, erasing an earlier loss.
Microsoft introduced two new enterprise-grade devices -- the Surface Pro 4 tablet and Surface Book laptop.
The tablet's screen measures 12.3 inches diagonally, versus 12 inches for the Surface Pro 3. Microsoft said it is 30% faster than its predecessor.
The tablet is compatible with an updated stylus that has a virtual eraser, and a keyboard that Microsoft said mocks a traditional laptop keyboard with better-spaced keys and a larger track pad.
The Surface Pro 4 will retail for $899. Pre-orders open on October 7, with shipments starting on October 26.
Microsoft said Surface Book is two times faster than Apple’s MacBook Pro.
The laptop has a 13.5-inch screen and will retail for $1,499, versus $1,299 for the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Shipments start on October 26.
Microsoft also unveiled the Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones, which feature displays measuring over 5 inches.
Both smartphones feature an organic LED display that lights up with notifications without touching the screen, using close to zero battery life. They also have updated 20-megapixel cameras with image stabilizers and 4K video capabilities, and 32GB of storage.
Microsoft said storage on the phones could be extended to up to 2 terabytes using a memory card.
Microsoft also said its new tablet and smartphones will come with Windows Hello, an automatic biometric sign-in option introduced earlier this year.
The feature allows users to scan their face, iris or fingerprints to verify their identity and give them access to Windows phones, laptops and personal computers.
The Lumia 950 has a starting price of $549, while the Lumia XL starts at $649.
The Lumias arrive in November.
The company also rolled out an updated version of its wearable fitness tracker, Microsoft Band.
The Microsoft Band 2, which allows users to monitor their fitness and exercise regime, will be priced at $249 when it becomes available on October 30
