Smartphone maker Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reported record sales of its new iPhone models over the weekend.
The company shifted more than 13mln iPhone 6s and iPhone 6S Plus units as the new models went on sale in 12 markets.
Analysts had expected sales of around 12-13mln, so sales were at the top end of expectations, but some pundits countered the usual media-inspired Apple euphoria by pointing out that the smaller of the two new models, the 6S, is seeing a much lower activation rate than the iPhone 6 did when it was first released.
Others were not surprised that sales had set a new record, as China was included among the launch markets for the first time.
The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available in more than 40 additional countries beginning October 9, including Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Taiwan, Apple announced. The new iPhones will be available in over 130 countries by the end of the year.
