Corero Network Securities inks cyber defence deal with FTSE100 firm

The order, worth around US$700,000, will provide the unnamed firm with worldwide Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection.

Cyber defence specialist Corero Network Security (LON:CNS) has inked a deal for its SmartWall Threat Defence System with a FTSE100 company.

The order, worth around US$700,000, will provide the unnamed firm with worldwide Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection.

DDoS attacks, where a target is flooded with data requests from multiple sources, are a widely used cyber weapon against government and corporate targets and can be costly.

Recent high profile victims of DDoS attacks include the Royal Bank of Scotland (LON:RBS), which was hit by a cyber attack that left customers unable to access their bank accounts.

Meanwhile, last month, Carphone Warehouse was hit, with up to 2.4mln customers having their details accessed by cyber specialists.

Ashley Stephenson, chief executive of Corero, said the increasing numbers of attacks “are bringing the frequency and severity of DDoS attacks to the forefront.”

Generally, these attacks are used as a smokescreen to camouflage other cyber-attacks, he added.

“Eliminating this risk, and the significant reputational damage of such an attack, requires real-time DDoS detection and mitigation solutions such as Corero's SmartWall TDS.”

Shares in Corero gained 8.6% to 14.25p today.
