Computer game developer Frontier Development (LON:FDEV) hailed the “highly successful” launch of its game Elite Dangerous in December as annual sales and profits more than doubled.
Revenue rose 139% to £22.8mln in the year to May, from £8.4mln previously. The firm also swung to a £1.6mln profit from a £1.7mln loss.
Net cash balances at 31 August were approximately £10.7mln, while at the end of last month the game had sold 825,000 paid units, excluding free demos, and accounted for 84% of revenue.
The game is self-published and has a number of associated merchandise products such as t-shirts.
Elite Dangerous has been released for Mac, Xbox One, and via the Steam and Xbox Live channels.
David Braben, chief executive, said: “The process of the beta and then release of Elite Dangerous went very smoothly and the regular delivery of new elements for the game has helped build an ever-growing fan base.
“With our first franchise about to enter its second season, and the announcement of our second, Planet Coaster, Frontier is in a very strong position.”
