Ilika PLC (AIM:IKA, OTCQX:ILIKF, FRA:I8A) CEO Graeme Purdy spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the latest progress with the company's Goliath battery technology following completion of its PRIMED programme, and why Ilika is focusing on commercial opportunities for its 10Ah cell.
Purdy highlighted improved manufacturing repeatability as a particularly important outcome, with Ilika using its automated pilot line to produce a consistent set of cells for evaluation by different partners, something he said matters when engineers assess cells for integration into battery packs.
On the decision to optimise the 10Ah format rather than move straight to 50Ah, Purdy said Ilika sees potential applications across consumer appliances including e-bikes, as well as defence: "I think this is a good point to start generating revenue and to identify some beachhead markets."
He also discussed independent testing by About:Energy and the importance of third-party validation. Potential customers can access independently verified cell parameters through About:Energy's database and model how the cells would perform in their own duty cycles, a process Purdy said this could shrink from months to just a few days.
Looking towards commercialisation, Purdy said Ilika plans to initially deploy its 1.5MWh automated pilot line for small-volume, high-margin manufacturing, with some target beachhead markets requiring volumes the existing pilot line can already service, allowing Ilika to move forward without waiting for automotive-scale manufacturing.
