Rolls-Royce leads crowded aerospace longs as Citi flags defence apathy

Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (LSE:RR.) is among a group of European aerospace names showing a high concentration of long positioning, as Citi notes reduced long exposure across several defence names.

The engine maker's shares climbed 1% to 1,471p as Citi published its quantitative positioning data, revealing that the broader aerospace and defence sector remains firmly 'consensus long' overall.

The update shows that aerospace names remain 'consensus long', with Airbus and Safran joining the British aerospace giant in retaining heavy investor backing across the major institutional trading markets.

In contrast, QinetiQ Group PLC (LSE:QQ.) suffered the largest monthly decline in long crowding and moved straight into the investor apathy zone alongside German peer Hensoldt.

Those shifting exposures dragged QinetiQ shares 1% lower to 490p, whilst Rheinmetall also saw its long exposure reduced despite remaining a 'consensus long' stock across the broader European financial markets.

In tandem, Babcock International PLC (LSE:BAB) shifted into 'consensus short' territory as shares fell 1% to 1,016p, following a sharp reduction in long exposure and renewed short betting.

In the same note, the quantitative research team flagged that Melrose Industries PLC (LSE:MRO, OTC:MLSPF) had the most bullish move across both timeframes within the two-way debate quadrant.

Despite those underlying positioning flows, the turnaround specialist saw its shares edge 1% lower to 490p as institutional investors recalibrated their complex industrial portfolios during Wednesday trading.

Hanging over the wider sector, Citi also notes that MTU remains heavily short-crowded, whilst Dassault continued to lose long positioning across both measured timeframes this month.
