Basking Biosciences, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, has reported positive topline results from a Phase 1 trial of its experimental drug BB-025.
The drug is designed to rapidly reverse the effects of BB-031, the company's experimental stroke treatment, in emergencies.
The company is developing a first-of-its-kind targeted therapy that dissolves blood clots and can be reversed if needed, for acute ischemic stroke.
BB-031 is an RNA aptamer, a short strand of genetic material designed to bind to specific targets, that selectively inhibits von Willebrand factor and is intended to restore blood flow in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
Julia C. Owens, Basking Biosciences' chief executive, said having a reversal agent distinguishes BB-031 from other thrombolytics in development for acute ischemic stroke.
The North Carolina based company said in the trial, 60 healthy adult volunteers received BB-025 at doses of up to 12 milligrams per kilogram, either alone or after receiving a single dose of BB-031.
When given after BB-031, BB-025 completely, rapidly and stably reversed the drug's activity, restoring normal blood clotting function within five minutes.
This reversal was demonstrated when BB-025 was administered both 30 minutes and five hours after BB-031.
Basking said BB-025 was generally safe and well tolerated across all doses tested, with no deaths, life-threatening events, or serious adverse events reported during the study.
