Tech Bytes: Stripe to acquire OpenRouter in major AI infrastructure deal

Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, the fast-growing marketplace and gateway for artificial intelligence models, as the payments company pushes deeper into infrastructure supporting the AI economy.

The deal was announced on August 19, 2026, making it one of the latest major transactions in the global technology sector. Stripe did not disclose the purchase price, although reports have valued the cash-and-stock transaction at about US$8 billion.

OpenRouter provides developers with a single interface for accessing and switching between hundreds of AI models, allowing users to optimise factors such as cost, performance and availability.

The company said it now processes more than 10 trillion tokens per day across over 400 AI models and serves a community of more than 10 million developers and companies.

OpenRouter said it would continue operating under the same name, with its existing product, mission and roadmap remaining in place following the transaction. The acquisition remains subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the coming weeks.

The transaction gives Stripe a substantially larger role in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

Stripe already provides payment, billing and financial infrastructure to technology companies. Adding OpenRouter could allow it to combine those capabilities with tools that help AI businesses manage increasingly significant spending on model inference and computing resources.

Stripe chief executive Patrick Collison said the company sees efficient use of AI tokens and scarce computing resources as increasingly important to the economics of businesses building with artificial intelligence.

The acquisition also highlights growing investor and corporate interest in the infrastructure surrounding AI models, rather than solely the companies developing the models themselves.
