American Resources Corp (NASDAQ:AREC) earlier this week announced that its ReElement Technologies division had successfully commissioned its first commercial-scale refining column at the Marion facility, marking an important milestone in the company's effort to establish a domestic critical minerals refining platform.
Speaking to Proactive, CFO Kirk Taylor said the company had moved from laboratory work to pilot operations and then to commercial-scale production in less than six months after beginning work on the current waste stream in March. He said the successful scale-up demonstrated that the company's refining technology performed consistently at each stage of development.
Taylor reported that the commercial system had validated the company's engineering approach, noting that equipment standardisation across future production lines should significantly reduce execution risk. He explained that future facilities would use the same valves, pumps, columns and piping, allowing the company to replicate proven operating conditions rather than redesigning equipment for every installation.
He also highlighted the flexibility of ReElement's modular refining platform. According to Taylor, the first commercial production line is focused on germanium, while the same equipment and processing parameters can also be used to recover and purify gallium from mine tailings containing germanium. He said this capability enables the company to process material closer to the source, reducing logistics costs and supply chain exposure.
Taylor noted that gallium is an important material for robotics and humanoid robotic chip applications, describing the market as experiencing "exponential growth". He added that the ability to recover both germanium and gallium from the same feedstock could improve the efficiency of the company's refining operations.
Looking ahead, Taylor identified the commissioning of three additional production lines over the next six months as a key operational catalyst. He said these facilities are intended to address specific domestic US and allied nation demand signals for critical minerals.
The successful commissioning of the first commercial refining line represents a significant operational milestone for ReElement, while the planned rollout of additional production lines and the company's ability to recover multiple critical minerals using the same modular platform are likely to remain important developments for investors to monitor.
