Tech Bytes: Fortescue eyes Pilbara AI data centre play as mining and technology converge

Fortescue Ltd (ASX:FMG) is reportedly considering owning and operating artificial intelligence data centres in Western Australia’s Pilbara, potentially opening a new growth avenue that combines mining infrastructure, renewable energy and digital technology.

The Andrew Forrest-led miner is exploring a data centre development of up to 2 gigawatts near Port Hedland, according to media reports, as it looks for additional customers for its expanding renewable electricity network.

AI developer Anthropic has been linked to the proposal as a possible partner, although neither Fortescue nor Anthropic has formally confirmed an agreement.

The plan would represent a significant expansion of Fortescue’s ambitions beyond supplying iron ore and renewable power, placing the ASX heavyweight directly inside the fast-growing infrastructure market supporting artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

Building power for new industries

Fortescue has already committed US$680 million to expand its green energy capacity in the Pilbara, including a 200-megawatt project intended to supply industrial customers such as data centre operators.

The company said the investment would build on its existing mining power network and create a pathway for new industries to operate with fossil fuel-free electricity.

Data centres require enormous and reliable supplies of electricity to operate servers, cooling systems and associated infrastructure. That requirement is becoming increasingly significant as companies train and deploy larger AI models.

Fortescue’s existing land, power infrastructure and operations around Port Hedland could give it an advantage over developers required to build new transmission networks and obtain access to suitable sites from the ground up.

Rather than simply selling renewable electricity to outside operators, Fortescue is reportedly considering taking an ownership role in the data centres themselves, potentially giving it exposure to the value generated by computing infrastructure.

Mining laws present key hurdle

The strategy may depend on changes to Western Australia’s Mining Act.

Infrastructure developed on mining tenements generally must be connected to mining activities. Fortescue is reportedly seeking reforms that would allow renewable power infrastructure located on those tenements to supply unrelated businesses, including data centres.

Such changes could enable Fortescue to sell surplus electricity to third parties and potentially accelerate projects by using its existing Pilbara footprint. However, legislative reform, planning approvals, environmental assessments and engagement with Traditional Owners would remain important considerations.

From iron ore to AI infrastructure

The proposal highlights how the global AI boom is beginning to reshape Australia’s resources sector.

Mining companies already possess many of the assets needed to support data centres, including large landholdings, power-generation systems, transmission infrastructure and experience developing major industrial projects in remote locations.

For Fortescue, the opportunity could help commercialise its renewable energy investments while diversifying revenue beyond iron ore.

The company is also reportedly considering using renewable power from its Holmaneset project in Norway to support data centres, suggesting the Pilbara proposal may form part of a broader digital infrastructure strategy.

The concept remains at an early and unconfirmed stage, but it demonstrates how the line between mining, energy and technology is becoming increasingly blurred.

Fortescue may ultimately find that one of the most valuable commodities produced from the Pilbara is not only iron ore, but the renewable electricity required to power the artificial intelligence economy.
