First Phosphate Corp. (CSE:PHOS, OTCQX:FRSPF, FRA:KD0, OTC:FPHOY) earlier this week announced that its Bégin-Lamarche project has been selected for Quebec's newly established fast-track permitting process, marking another step forward in advancing the company's flagship phosphate development.
Speaking with Proactive, chief executive officer John Passalacqua said First Phosphate is among the first three companies chosen to participate in the provincial initiative, which is designed to accelerate permitting for strategically important resource projects.
Passalacqua said the Bégin-Lamarche deposit represents one of the few rare igneous phosphate deposits in North America and provides Quebec with a competitive advantage in supplying high-purity phosphate for the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery market. He explained that the deposit's phosphate is suitable for producing purified phosphoric acid, a key input for LFP battery production.
The CEO said the fast-track process will improve coordination across provincial ministries by placing the Natural Resources and Energy Ministry in a central role to oversee interactions with departments responsible for areas including environmental and financial approvals. According to Passalacqua, the approach is intended to reduce administrative delays and could shorten permitting timelines by months or even years.
He described the latest development as "a massive de-risking for the project," adding that the initiative demonstrates continued government confidence in the strategic importance of the company's development plans.
Passalacqua also noted that the project has received recognition not only from the Government of Quebec and the Canadian government but also at the G7 level and from various European Union states. He said this growing level of international support reflects increasing interest in establishing secure critical mineral supply chains for the battery sector.
The latest permitting milestone could act as an important catalyst for First Phosphate by improving project visibility, reducing regulatory uncertainty and potentially accelerating the path toward project development. Continued government support, combined with progress through the permitting process, may position the company to advance future development milestones as demand for LFP battery materials continues to grow.
