Australian football fans are embracing an AI-enhanced referee camera that delivers a first-person view of FIFA World Cup matches, underlining how artificial intelligence is reshaping live sports broadcasting.
Known as Referee View, the system uses a lightweight camera mounted on the match official to capture footage from the centre of play. Lenovo’s video analytics technology processes the fast-moving feed in real time, reducing camera shake by as much as 60% and converting it into stable, broadcast-quality footage.
The technology has reportedly appeared about three times per match and has been distributed across more than 220 territories, giving broadcasters additional footage of goals, player exchanges, team entrances and other high-intensity moments.
Australian fans back immersive coverage
Research commissioned by Lenovo found that 88% of surveyed Australian viewers believed close-up camera perspectives helped them feel as though they were on the pitch, while 96% said new broadcast technology had made the tournament more dynamic.
Awareness of Referee View was also relatively high, with 71% of Australian World Cup viewers surveyed saying they had seen or heard of the technology. Among those familiar with it, 90% found the perspective appealing.
Picture quality remains central to its reception. Around 89% of respondents said stable footage was important when watching sport, while 98% placed importance on image clarity. A further 91% agreed technology was improving the overall World Cup viewing experience.
The findings came from an online survey of 2,514 adults across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and India. The Australian sample included 503 respondents, all of whom had watched World Cup matches or related video content.
AI moves deeper into the game
Referee View is part of a wider technology rollout by FIFA’s official technology partner, Lenovo.
The tournament is also using semi-automated offside technology supported by multiple camera angles and AI, connected match-ball sensors, digital player avatars and the FIFA AI Pro platform, which provides teams and officials with match analysis and tactical insights.
Lenovo is supporting the tournament with more than 17,000 devices and over 200 engineers across command, operational and broadcast centres covering the three host countries.
The referee camera is primarily designed to enhance broadcasting rather than replace human decision-making. However, its deployment shows how AI can make difficult camera feeds more usable while offering audiences perspectives previously unavailable through conventional sideline coverage.
From novelty to broadcast standard
The strong viewer response suggests referee-mounted cameras could become a regular feature of major sporting events, particularly as AI stabilisation and real-time processing continue to improve.
