Australia, Canada and India have formalised a new three-way technology partnership designed to strengthen cooperation across artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cybersecurity and digital infrastructure.
The countries have signed a memorandum of understanding establishing the Australia–Canada–India Technology and Innovation Partnership, known as ACITI, creating a framework for governments, researchers, investors and technology businesses to collaborate more closely.
The agreement builds on a commitment made by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2026 to advance the initiative.
AI adoption and workforce skills in focus
Artificial intelligence sits at the centre of the partnership, with the three countries planning to exchange knowledge on how businesses and governments can adopt the technology to lift productivity and improve public services.
A joint working group will examine AI workforce skills, helping the participating countries prepare workers for jobs increasingly shaped by automation, data analysis and intelligent software.
The group will also explore ways to strengthen links between AI startups, established businesses and investors, potentially giving Australian technology companies greater access to two substantial international markets.
India brings a fast-growing digital economy and a large pool of technology talent, while Canada has developed significant expertise in AI research and commercialisation. Australia, meanwhile, is seeking to expand domestic AI capabilities while encouraging responsible adoption across industry.
Startups and investors could benefit
The partnership is expected to create opportunities for technology startups seeking capital, research partners and entry into overseas markets.
Collaboration between innovation ecosystems could support joint research projects, technology trials and commercial partnerships involving companies from all three countries.
Alongside AI, the agreement covers digital infrastructure, semiconductor technology and cybersecurity — sectors that are becoming increasingly important as governments work to secure data, computing capacity and critical technology supply chains.
The semiconductor component is particularly significant given the central role advanced chips play in artificial intelligence, communications, defence systems, transport and industrial automation.
Closer coordination could help the countries identify complementary research, manufacturing and supply-chain capabilities, although the memorandum does not yet outline specific funding commitments or commercial projects.
Tackling AI risks and regulation
The ACITI working group will also exchange information on AI policy, regulation and risk mitigation.
That work could include discussions around transparency, privacy, cybersecurity, misinformation and the safe deployment of increasingly capable AI systems.
Developing broadly compatible approaches could make it easier for companies to operate across the three markets, reducing the risk of sharply different regulatory requirements.
However, the countries are likely to retain their own domestic rules and policy priorities. The partnership is therefore more likely to encourage coordination and knowledge sharing than establish a single regulatory system.
Supporting Australia’s national AI ambitions
The Australian Government said the agreement supports its National AI Plan and its broader objective of encouraging technology adoption that improves productivity and quality of life.
For Australia, ACITI provides another avenue to deepen strategic and commercial relationships with India and Canada while building greater resilience in critical and emerging technologies.
The immediate impact will depend on how quickly the joint working group translates broad commitments into research programs, investment initiatives and industry partnerships.
Still, the agreement signals that international technology alliances are becoming an increasingly important part of AI policy, as countries seek to share expertise, attract investment and reduce their dependence on concentrated global technology supply chains.
