Small Cap Watch: Pilbara Gold, Lightning Minerals, FOS Capital and Alterity update markets

The S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries Index (XSO) finished slightly weaker yesterday, slipping 5.30 points, or 0.15%, to 3,434.50.

Despite the modest daily decline, the small-cap index was broadly flat over the past five trading days, edging up just 0.20 points, or 0.01%, as investors continued to weigh company-specific news against a quieter broader market backdrop.

Against that steady index performance, several small-cap companies provided operational and commercial updates, with activity spanning gold exploration, healthcare infrastructure lighting and biotechnology. You can read about the following and more throughout the day.

Pilbara Gold advances Mt York drilling ahead of PFS

Pilbara Gold Ltd (ASX:PGL) has provided an update on drilling and the pre-feasibility study schedule at its 2.1-million-ounce Mt York Gold Project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, where a drilling campaign of more than 50,000 metres is underway.

The company currently has five rigs operating on site, with a sixth rig expected to arrive by the end of July.

So far, Pilbara Gold has completed 13,748 metres of drilling, with first assays expected by the end of July.

The program is testing extensions to the deposit at depth for a potential open-pit operation, while also increasing resource confidence ahead of a maiden reserve estimate for the PFS.

Extensional drilling at Main Hill, Main Hill Extension, Breccia Hill and Gossan Hill has intersected banded iron formation in all holes, which is the host unit for gold mineralisation at Mt York.

About half of the broader drilling program is aimed at extending mineralisation currently sitting outside the mineral resource, both at depth and along strike.

Lightning Minerals completes Western Zone soil program

Lightning Minerals Ltd (ASX:L1M, FRA:YZ1) has completed its Western Zone soil geochemistry program at the wholly owned Mt Turner Gold Project in North Queensland, marking another step toward refining Phase 3 drill targets.

The company collected 551 systematic soil samples across the highly prospective Western Zone target, completing the program safely, ahead of schedule and below budget.

Lightning said the outcome reflected its disciplined approach to exploration, execution and capital management.

The Western Zone is the second major district-scale geochemical program completed at Mt Turner, following the 2025 Drummer Fault campaign.

Geochemistry remains a key part of Lightning’s strategy to assess multiple gold-bearing structural corridors across the broader project area, as it works to build a pipeline of drill-ready targets.

FOS Capital wins Monash Medical Clinic Tower lighting contract

FOS Capital Ltd (ASX), through wholly owned subsidiary FOS Lighting Pty Ltd, has secured the lighting contract for the Monash Medical Clinic Tower Expansion project in Victoria.

The contract is valued at around $1 million.

FOS said the award represented a significant healthcare lighting project with one of Australia’s leading healthcare organisations.

The contract also strengthens the company’s position as a supplier of specialised lighting solutions for critical infrastructure projects, particularly in healthcare settings where reliability, compliance and performance are central to project delivery.

Alterity confirms FDA-backed Phase 3 pathway

Alterity Therapeutics Ltd (ASX:ATH) has received official US Food and Drug Administration meeting minutes confirming a clear registrational pathway for ATH434, its lead drug candidate for Multiple System Atrophy.

The minutes follow Alterity’s End-of-Phase 2 meeting with the FDA and confirm support for a single pivotal Phase 3 trial backed by confirmatory evidence.

The company said the feedback provides clarity on the key elements of its planned Phase 3 program and the pathway toward a potential New Drug Application filing.

Alterity said Phase 3 trial activities remain on track to begin by the end of 2026.
