New Era Energy & Digital names Charlie Nelson as chief executive

New Era Energy & Digital (NASDAQ:NUAI) has appointed Charlie Nelson as chairman and chief executive, promoting him from his previous role as president and chief operating officer.

The move, effective from Wednesday (1 July), is part of a broader leadership reshuffle at the Nasdaq-listed data centre developer.

E. Will Gray II will step down from the board and move into a new role as president of the Permian, focused on the company's Permian Basin relationships and development work.

Ted Warner has been named president and chief financial officer and joins the board, retaining his finance and capital markets responsibilities while taking on wider strategic duties.

New Era also appointed José Rodriguez as chief operating officer.

Rodriguez has held data centre and infrastructure roles at Microsoft, TikTok and Amazon Web Services, and earlier worked on gas turbine and nuclear power projects at GE, Entergy and the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Darin Rovell has been appointed chief accounting officer, having previously led reporting and accounting at HF Sinclair.

Nelson said the changes reflect the demands of the company's next phase, citing data centre delivery, power development, commercial partnerships and capital formation as priorities.

He said the new team would help advance the Texas Critical Data Centers project and build New Era into a larger digital infrastructure platform.

Gray said he retained confidence in Nelson's leadership and would continue supporting the business in the Permian.

New Era is developing large-scale data centres in energy-rich US markets to support AI training and inference workloads.

Its flagship project, Texas Critical Data Centers, covers 492 acres in the Permian Basin, with capacity expected to scale to 1.4 gigawatts over time.

The company's strategy combines large sites with flexible power solutions, including behind-the-meter generation, alongside a phased deployment model intended to limit community impact and speed up delivery for hyperscale, enterprise and edge customers.
