Astral Resources: Kalgoorlie gold developer moves from resource growth to development execution

Astral Resources NL (ASX:AAR) is entering a defining phase in its evolution from explorer to developer, with its flagship Mandilla Gold Project near Kalgoorlie now supported by a larger gold inventory, active definitive feasibility study work and a well-funded pathway toward a final investment decision.

The company’s story has shifted materially over the past year. What was once framed largely around discovery and resource growth is now becoming a broader development proposition built around Mandilla, Feysville and Spargoville - three wholly owned Western Australian gold assets that give Astral a growing footprint in one of Australia’s most established gold districts.

Mandilla remains the centrepiece

Mandilla, about 70 kilometres south of Kalgoorlie, remains the anchor asset. In April, Astral increased the Mandilla mineral resource estimate to 54 million tonnes at 1.0 g/t gold for 1.74 million ounces, up from 1.43 million ounces previously.

Including Feysville and Spargoville, the group resource now stands at 61.6 million tonnes at 1.0 g/t gold for 2.072 million ounces.

The increase matters because Astral is not simply adding ounces for scale. The company is using the updated resource to sharpen mine design, de-risk the first stages of production and support the Mandilla Definitive Feasibility Study. Theia remains the cornerstone deposit, hosting 41.0 million tonnes at 1.1 g/t gold for 1.39 million ounces, or about 80% of the Mandilla resource.

From PFS to DFS

The development case was established in the June 2025 pre-feasibility study, which outlined a long-life open-pit operation producing about 95,000 ounces a year for the first 12 years, before moving into stockpile processing, for an overall mine life of 18.5 years. The PFS included pre-production capital of A$180 million, all-in sustaining costs of A$2,085 per ounce, pre-tax NPV8 of A$1.4 billion and pre-tax free cash flow of A$2.8 billion. Proactive previously covered the broader development case here: From discovery to development: Astral Resources shapes WA’s next long-life gold operation.

Astral is now advancing the Mandilla DFS, with technical workstreams, permitting and approvals continuing. During the March quarter, the company completed 102 reverse circulation holes for 13,069 metres at Mandilla, targeting grade control at Theia Stage 2, Eos extensions, the Theia-Iris gap, Theia Deeps pre-collars and sterilisation drilling. It also completed 12 geotechnical diamond holes across Eos, Hestia and the proposed processing plant location. Proactive covered that quarterly progress here: Astral advances Mandilla DFS as drilling builds across gold project portfolio.

Theia depth potential adds another layer

While the DFS is focused on turning Mandilla into a near-term open-pit development, recent drilling has added another dimension to the story: depth potential at Theia.

In May, Astral reported that early diamond drilling at Theia had intersected strong quartz veining and visible gold well below the current pit design. The program was expanded after visual logging indicated the mineral system could continue materially below the existing resource limits. Proactive covered the exploration and development update here: Astral Resources extends Mandilla potential with deeper drilling and high-grade Spargoville hits.

A follow-up Proactive interview also highlighted the underground potential at Theia, with managing director Marc Ducler noting that drilling continued to show the system remained open at depth. That interview is here: Astral’s Theia deposit shows major growth potential at depth.

For investors, the significance is that Theia may not be limited to the current open-pit development model. If further drilling supports an underground component, Astral could have a second-stage growth opportunity beneath the project’s proposed production base.

Spargoville and Feysville broaden the platform

Astral’s portfolio is no longer a single-project story. The company’s website positions Mandilla, Feysville and Spargoville as its core Western Australian gold project suite, with Spargoville and Feysville providing potential satellite feed and regional optionality around the main Mandilla development hub.

Spargoville has become particularly important since its acquisition through the Maximus Resources merger. While Spargoville was not included in the Mandilla PFS, Astral has been active there with resource definition and target-generation drilling. During the March quarter, the company completed 114 RC holes for 13,947 metres at Spargoville, including work at the Wattle Dam Complex and 5B deposit.

High-grade results from Spargoville have added to the broader development picture, reinforcing its potential as either an independent growth asset or future satellite source. Proactive covered this in the May update alongside the Theia Deeps work: Astral Resources extends Mandilla potential with deeper drilling and high-grade Spargoville hits.

Feysville also remains part of the plan. Astral has been progressing drilling at the Kamperman deposit and has flagged a proposed joint venture with Mineral Mining Services over the Think Big deposit, expected to support an early mining pathway. Proactive previously covered the company’s DFS and early production strategy here: Astral Resources progresses Mandilla DFS and secures JV path for early production.

Funding gives Astral room to execute

One of the more important developments in the past six months was Astral’s A$65 million placement, which strengthened the balance sheet ahead of the Mandilla DFS, early development works and ongoing drilling. Proactive covered the raise here: Astral secures $65 million to accelerate Mandilla development.

By the end of the March quarter, Astral had about A$73 million in cash, giving it meaningful flexibility as it advances study work, permitting, drilling and potential early development activities.

That funding position is central to the investment case. In a market where many developers struggle to bridge the gap between study and construction, Astral has given itself time and balance-sheet strength to move through DFS, approvals and financing discussions without immediately returning to the market.

Why it matters now

Astral is now sitting at the point where exploration success, study work and funding need to converge.

The next key milestones are the completion of the Mandilla DFS, continued resource confidence work at Theia, further clarity on Theia Deeps, progress on approvals and a potential final investment decision. Earlier Proactive coverage noted the company was aiming for a DFS in the June 2026 quarter and a final investment decision by September, subject to approvals.

For a Western Australian gold developer, the attraction is straightforward: Mandilla offers scale, location, a conventional open-pit development model and leverage to a strong gold price. The upside case is that Astral can add depth potential at Theia and satellite feed from Feysville and Spargoville, extending the project from a single-mine development into a broader Kalgoorlie gold hub.

The company still has work to do. DFS delivery, approvals, debt funding, construction planning and execution risk all remain ahead. But Astral has moved beyond being just another resource-growth story. It is now one of the more advanced ASX-listed gold developers in the Kalgoorlie region, with a clearer line of sight to production and a growing regional platform around Mandilla.
