Gunnison Copper Corp (TSX:GCU, OTCQB:GCUMF, FRA:3XS0) announced that it has appointed Bjorn Meyer as chief operating officer, bolstering its leadership team as the company advances production at the Johnson Camp Mine and development of the Gunnison Copper Project in Arizona.
Meyer succeeds Robert Winton, who spent more than five years with the company and helped guide the Johnson Camp Mine through construction, commissioning, and into production.
Meyer brings more than two decades of mining experience in Arizona, with expertise spanning mine operations, engineering, project execution, and operational improvement.
Most recently, he served as president of Cripple Creek & Victor Mining Company, an SSR Mining operation, where he oversaw integration efforts following an acquisition and developed a long-term growth strategy.
Before joining SSR Mining, Meyer was vice president of operations and executive director of innovation and growth at Panasonic Energy Corporation North America, where he helped oversee the launch of a US$5.5 billion battery manufacturing facility. He also spent 20 years at ASARCO, including more than a decade as general mine manager of the Mission Complex.
As COO, Meyer will oversee Gunnison's operating activities, including the Johnson Camp Mine, and support efforts to advance the Gunnison Copper Project.
"Bjorn is a highly respected mining executive with extensive operational experience in Arizona's copper industry and a proven ability to lead large teams, drive operational excellence, and safely deliver results,” Gunnison CEO Craig Hallworth said in a statement.
“His background in mine operations, engineering, project execution, and continuous improvement makes him an ideal addition to our leadership team as we continue to grow production at Johnson Camp and accelerate the Gunnison Copper Project.”
Gunnison has also promoted Scott Harrell to vice president, people. Harrell leads the company's human resources function and has experience in Arizona's mining sector, focusing on workforce development, employee engagement, and safety initiatives.
"Scott brings a wealth of leadership experience in building strong teams and high-performance cultures,” Hallworth said. “As we continue to grow our operations and development activities, he will be instrumental in attracting, developing, and retaining the talented workforce needed to achieve our long-term objectives."
In a separate announcement, Gunnison reported that shareholders approved all items presented at its annual general meeting held June 25 in Vancouver.
Shareholders elected six directors, including President and CEO Craig Hallworth and Chairman Stephen Twyerould, approved the appointment of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as auditor, and endorsed amendments to the company's stock option, restricted share unit and performance share unit plans, as well as its deferred share unit plan.
The company said the leadership changes are intended to support its strategy of increasing copper production, advancing development projects, and expanding resources across its Southern Arizona operations.
