Iron Bear Resources secures further Vale funding for flagship Canadian iron ore project

Iron Bear Resources Ltd (ASX:IBR) has received a further US$2 million funding tranche from Vale S.A. to advance the company’s flagship Iron Bear iron ore project in the Labrador Trough of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

The payment represents the fourth tranche of Vale’s Phase 1 contribution under a binding development agreement between the two companies for the joint development of the project.

Vale has now contributed US$16.7 million to advance Project Iron Bear, with a final US$1.3 million tranche expected in July 2026. Iron Bear’s subsidiary Iron Block 103 Corporation currently holds about A$3.6 million in cash for project development activities under the agreement.

Managing director Paul Berend said the latest payment demonstrated Vale’s ongoing commitment to the project.

“This funding will support operational progress, including the upcoming drilling campaign and the completion of the Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS), building on the achievements made over the past several months,” Berend said.

Funding supports next stage of project work

The Vale funding comes as Iron Bear continues to advance technical work at the large-scale iron ore project, including drilling and PFS activities.

Under the development agreement, Vale can provide up to US$138 million in funding across two phases to earn a 75% interest in the project.

The project has also recently been underpinned by an updated JORC 2012-compliant Mineral Resource Estimate of 13.6 billion tonnes at 30% iron, including an Indicated Resource of 4.5 billion tonnes at 29.5% iron.

The Indicated Resource increased by 114% from the previous estimate of 2.1 billion tonnes, reflecting updated classification criteria based on drill spacing, revised geological interpretation and an optimised pit shell supporting reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction.

Large-scale resource in established iron ore region

The Iron Bear Project is in the Labrador Trough, a long-established Canadian iron ore province that has supported mining operations since 1954.

The project is about 30 kilometres northwest of Schefferville and consists of 10 licences covering 7,275 hectares across 291 mineral claims.

Iron Bear says the project benefits from strategic infrastructure access, including proximity of less than 35 kilometres to an existing open-access heavy haul railway linked to an iron ore export port.

Project attributes supporting development include a low stripping ratio, negligible overburden and access to low-cost renewable hydropower.

Metallurgical test work has produced direct reduction concentrate grading 71% iron with low silica content of 1.2%, as well as blast furnace concentrate grading 69.1% iron and 3.5% silica and alumina.
