Citi sees little new in BT pension briefing

Citi has said a briefing by BT Group PLC (LSE:BT.A) on its pension scheme offered little fresh information for investors.

The UK telecoms operator hosted a teach-in ahead of a triennial valuation of its pension scheme, a three-yearly health check that sets how much the company must contribute.

That valuation is due to be priced at the end of June, with results expected late in 2026 or early in 2027.

Citi said the session served as a useful reminder of the main moving parts but contained no material new detail.

The bank stressed that its sell rating on BT did not rest on the pension.

Instead, it pointed to what it called the structurally challenging UK fixed telecoms market, where competition and heavy network investment weigh on returns.

Even so, Citi said the scheme remained an important part of the investment case given its size.

BT's pension is among the largest of any company listed in London, and its funding position can swing the group's cash flows and balance sheet.
