Week ahead: Micron earnings to put AI rally to the test

Wall Street enters the final full week of June with investors juggling inflation, artificial intelligence and the health of the banking sector.

After last week's Federal Reserve meeting under new Chair Kevin Warsh, attention now shifts to a busy slate of economic data, corporate earnings and Fed commentary that could help shape expectations for interest rates and market direction heading into the second half of the year.

The week's biggest corporate event comes Wednesday when Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) reports quarterly results. The memory-chip maker has emerged as one of the biggest winners of the AI boom, making its outlook closely watched across the semiconductor industry.

Investors will be looking for updates on demand for high-bandwidth memory chips used in AI servers, as well as management's expectations for datacenter spending.

Analysts are forecasting quarterly revenue of roughly $33.5 billion to $34.7 billion, adjusted earnings per share near $19 to $20 and gross margins above 80%, supported by strong demand for AI-related memory products.

According to Swissquote senior analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya, expectations for Micron remain exceptionally high after a remarkable run in the stock.

"The real test will not be the quarter itself but whether Micron can convince investors that the AI memory boom still has room to run," Ozkardeskaya said, noting that investors may demand another strong forecast after the stock's dramatic gains over the past year.

Retail activity will also draw attention as Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) launches its four-day Prime Day shopping event on Tuesday.

Competitors including Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Kohl's are expected to offer rival promotions, giving investors a real-time look at consumer spending trends amid elevated inflation and borrowing costs.

The macroeconomic highlight arrives Thursday with the release of the core Personal Consumption Expenditures index, the Fed's preferred measure of inflation.

Economists expect annual core PCE inflation to rise to about 3.4%, a reading that could reinforce concerns that price pressures remain stubbornly high.

Analysts at Deutsche Bank said markets will be closely watching whether inflation continues to accelerate after last week's hawkish signals from Fed policymakers. Deutsche Bank now expects the Fed to raise rates twice this year, in September and December, arguing that persistent inflation could require further action from policymakers.

Alongside Thursday's inflation report, investors will also receive data on personal income, consumer spending and durable goods orders, while remarks from New York Fed President John Williams and Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee may offer additional insight into how the central bank is thinking about rates under Warsh's leadership.

Elsewhere, investors will monitor the annual Russell index reconstitution, which often drives significant trading volumes as funds rebalance portfolios.

On the earnings front, results from FedEx Corp (NYSE:FDX, XETRA:FDX) and Carnival Corp (NYSE:CCL) on Tuesday will offer additional clues about global trade activity and consumer travel demand before Micron takes center stage later in the week.
