HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd (TSX:HIVE, NASDAQ:HIVE, FRA:YO0, BVC:HIVECO) announced that it has completed its first artificial intelligence research project using graphics processing units (GPUs) in Paraguay in collaboration with Columbia University's Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research.
The company said the research has been submitted to the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), a major annual conference focused on machine learning and computational neuroscience.
According to HIVE, the project served as a proof of concept for intercontinental AI training, with researchers in New York conducting iterative training runs on GPUs located in Asunción, Paraguay. The company said the work established baseline data on the performance of AI workloads using its GPUs in the country.
Researchers from Columbia University reported that they optimized their code for HIVE's A40 GPUs over a two-month period and evaluated throughput and latency for pretraining large language models containing up to 1.4 billion parameters. They reported that, after normalizing for the raw performance of each hardware platform, the results obtained using HIVE's A40 GPUs matched those observed on Nvidia's newer-generation H100 systems for their specific use case.
The research team also tested serving throughput and latency for its 1.4-billion-parameter model and conducted standard performance tests for LLaMA models.
HIVE said the measured token-per-second, latency and bandwidth data provide a foundation for a planned high-performance computing and AI facility in Yguazú, Paraguay, where the company is constructing a 100-megawatt substation.
Civil works have been completed, with commissioning expected this summer and energization anticipated in September 2026. Construction of a Tier III data center is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2026, with operations expected to start in the second half of 2027.
Hive’s executive chairman, Frank Holmes, said the project demonstrated that high-performance computing infrastructure can be accessed remotely across long distances and supports HIVE's efforts to expand AI computing capabilities in Paraguay.
“This milestone further validates the commercial potential of HIVE's AI platform and our ability to deliver compute across borders,” Holmes said.
“This is also an important moment for Paraguay. Paraguay has the power, the strategic location, and now the proof point. HIVE is proud to help bring that future online."
Aydin Kilic, HIVE CEO, said the results support the company's view that software and engineering optimizations can improve the performance of existing hardware for AI workloads.
Shares of HIVE surged over 11% in New York on Monday morning at $7.36.
