Cobalt Blue Holdings Ltd CEO and Managing Director Dr Andrew Tong talked with Proactive about Project Infinity, the company’s proposed polymetallic nodule refinery in the United States, being advanced with Glomar Minerals LLC.
Tong discussed the company’s focus on critical minerals processing, explaining why control of refining capacity is becoming central to the global race for metals such as manganese, cobalt, nickel and copper. He said Glomar Minerals has access to deep-sea polymetallic nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, which contain multiple valuable metals and may offer a high-grade feedstock for future processing.
Cobalt Blue has received around 25 kilograms of polymetallic nodule samples at its Broken Hill Technology Centre, where it is carrying out preliminary test work. Tong said the early work is focused on acid consumption and metal recoveries, which will help define the scope of a larger pilot program and support feasibility work for Project Infinity.
A key part of the discussion was the link between Cobalt Blue’s Kwinana Cobalt Refinery and the proposed US refinery. Tong also outlined progress on potential US sites, with the company narrowing its search to four locations across Texas, Louisiana and North Carolina.
