Mobia Medical poised for commercial expansion, BofA says in initial coverage

Mobia Medical (NASDAQ:MOBI) was initiated with a ‘Buy’ rating and a $16 price target by Bank of America, which cited the company's growth potential in stroke recovery treatment and a large addressable market for its Vivistim system.

Mobia's Vivistim therapy combines rehabilitation exercises with a vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) device designed to help chronic stroke survivors improve upper-limb function.

Bank of America believes that the company currently benefits from a first-mover advantage, with no direct competitors expected in the near term.

The firm estimates Mobia is addressing a US market opportunity exceeding $30 billion, based on roughly 1 million chronic ischemic stroke survivors who experience moderate to severe upper-extremity impairment and meet criteria for therapy. Bank of America noted the market could expand over time, as there are approximately 9 million ischemic stroke survivors in the United States overall.

According to the firm, around 200,000 new US stroke survivors each year may qualify for Vivistim therapy, representing an annual market opportunity of approximately $6 billion. Of those, roughly 50,000 patients fall within Mobia's initial target population.

The analysts highlighted commercialization as a key factor in determining the pace of growth. The firm noted that Mobia's customer base is concentrated among US stroke centers, with approximately 1,500 facilities representing potential targets for the Vivistim program. About 900 of those centers treat the majority of US stroke patients.

Mobia currently supports 31 active sales territories through a team of territory managers and therapy development specialists. Bank of America estimates the company would ultimately require 150 to 200 territory managers to reach broad national coverage and expects management to continue expanding its salesforce over the coming years.

The firm also pointed to favorable reimbursement dynamics. Vivistim procedures are covered under an established CPT code, with average facility reimbursement of approximately $53,000 per procedure, compared with the device's average selling price of about $36,000.

Bank of America based its $16 price target on a valuation of 4.5 times estimated 2027 enterprise value-to-sales, citing Mobia's growth prospects and margin profile relative to comparable small- and mid-cap medical technology companies. This price target implies upside from current levels of about $14.

The firm identified market development, patient adoption, reimbursement changes, competitive threats and higher-than-expected spending requirements among the key risks to its outlook.
