hVIVO PLC's (AIM:HVO) consultancy contract with Decoy Therapeutics, announced on Monday, is a small deal by any financial measure, but Peel Hunt's reading of it points to something more strategically significant for the AIM-listed contract research organisation.
The agreement covers a wide range of services to support Decoy's development of its Designable Multi-Antiviral candidates, a novel antiviral category targeting shared mechanisms across multiple respiratory viruses with a single, adaptable therapeutic approach.
hVIVO will provide translational modelling, regulatory strategy, chemistry, manufacturing and controls consulting, non-clinical development support, and preparation of clinical and regulatory documentation for European and UK trial submissions.
This includes support for interactions with the European Medicines Agency and the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
No financial terms have been disclosed, and Decoy itself carries a market capitalisation of around $9 million on Nasdaq, making this a materially modest contract in revenue terms.
What matters to Peel Hunt, which maintains a 'buy' rating and 11p target price on hVIVO, is what the contract represents rather than what it is worth.
The bank argues the deal demonstrates growing comfort among smaller biotechs, beyond the larger pharmaceutical clients typically associated with hVIVO's human challenge trial work, with the full breadth of specialist expertise the company can now deploy as a full-service contract research organisation.
Human challenge trials, in which healthy volunteers are deliberately exposed to pathogens under controlled conditions to test experimental treatments, have historically been hVIVO's calling card and primary revenue driver.
The Decoy contract suggests the company is successfully leveraging that scientific reputation into adjacent consultancy and development services, widening its addressable client base beyond big pharma.
Subject to Decoy securing further financing and achieving programme milestones, the two companies intend to progress towards early proof-of-concept studies and potential follow-on work.
