BioVie completes final patient visit in Parkinson's drug trial

BioVie Inc (NASDAQ:BIVI, NASDAQ:BIVIW) has completed the last patient evaluation visit in its SUNRISE-PD Phase 2 clinical trial testing drug candidate bezisterim in early-stage Parkinson's disease, with topline results expected in the third quarter.

The NASDAQ-listed clinical-stage company said the completion of the final visit marks the start of the study closeout process.

The trial was designed to measure bezisterim's therapeutic impact across a range of motor and non-motor endpoints to inform the design of future Phase 3 registrational trials, CEO Cuong Do told shareholders.

"We look forward to unblinding the data later this year to understand the molecule's true potential," Do said in a statement.

Bezisterim targets insulin resistance, which researchers believe plays a role in the pathology and progression of neurodegenerative conditions. The drug is also being evaluated for its potential to address non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including sleep disorder, anxiety, depression and cognitive slowness.

BioVie is focused on developing drug therapies for neurological and neurodegenerative diseases.
