Ocean Power Technologies deploys three PowerBuoy systems for DHS network off San Diego - ICYMI

Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NYSE-A:OPTT) earlier this week announced the deployment of three PowerBuoy systems for a Department of Homeland Security surveillance network off the coast of San Diego, marking the largest multi-buoy deployment completed by the company to date.

CEO Philipp Stratmann told Proactive the deployment represents a significant operational milestone as the systems are functioning together in a live environment while streaming real-time data.

Stratmann said the deployment validates the company’s ability to move beyond pilot projects and into operational multi-asset deployments for customers. He noted that the systems are integrated into a broader defence and intelligence framework through collaboration with defence technology company Anduril.

“Our data is streaming to Anduril who is integrating it into their system to provide it to the Department of Homeland Security,” Stratmann explained during the interview.

The deployment was completed in approximately 3,500 feet of water, representing the deepest installation ever undertaken by Ocean Power Technologies. Stratmann said this expands the company’s addressable market beyond coastal and continental shelf applications into deep-ocean surveillance and monitoring opportunities.

According to the CEO, the successful deployment demonstrates the scalability of the company’s autonomous ocean systems and creates a pathway for future contracts involving larger surveillance networks.

The company also pointed to increasing geopolitical tensions and growing global demand for maritime security infrastructure as potential catalysts for future growth. Stratmann highlighted opportunities in strategically sensitive waterways including the Strait of Hormuz and the eastern Baltic.

Ocean Power Technologies already has a deployed buoy system in the UAE and additional autonomous vehicles pre-positioned in the region. Stratmann said recent management appointments in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia are intended to strengthen local relationships and support regional expansion opportunities.

The CEO suggested that urgency around port and seaway security is increasing globally as governments and defence agencies seek improved ocean intelligence capabilities.
