Poolbeg Pharma PLC (AIM:POLB, OTC:POLBF, FRA:POLBF), the clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, will present new data on its lead candidate POLB 001 at the European Haematology Association (EHA) congress in Stockholm next month.
The poster presentation, scheduled for 13 June, outlines further evidence of POLB 001's potential to prevent cytokine release syndrome (CRS), a serious and sometimes life-threatening side effect of cancer immunotherapy treatments.
Data from animal models showed POLB 001 reduced multiple key CRS-related inflammatory proteins, while laboratory studies demonstrated the drug could suppress the inflammatory response without impairing the ability of immunotherapy treatments to kill tumour cells.
POLB 001 is an oral drug that works by inhibiting p38 MAPK, an enzyme involved in the production of inflammatory signalling molecules.
Poolbeg believes the candidate could widen access to cancer immunotherapies by reducing the side effects that currently limit their use.
