NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) is pointing to its lead drug candidate NV-387 as a potential solution to a critical gap in infectious disease preparedness, as a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship triggers a costly global containment effort.
The Connecticut-based clinical-stage company said NV-387 has completed Phase I clinical trials for safety and tolerability in healthy volunteers and has shown effectiveness against multiple virus families in lethal animal models, including coronaviruses, RSV, influenza, monkeypox and measles, tested via the same respiratory route through which Andes hantavirus spreads.
"NV-387 could have possibly saved lives of the infected patients," said Anil Diwan, president and executive chairman, adding that physicians could have sought access under emergency or expanded use procedures.
NanoViricides says NV-387 targets viral entry mechanisms shared across virus families, giving it potential effectiveness against more than 90% of known pathogenic viral infections. The company believes this approach offers a structural advantage over vaccines and targeted antibody therapies, both of which require time to develop and remain vulnerable to variant escape.
The company's broader goal is to establish NV-387 as a first-response tool that could be rapidly deployed at the onset of an outbreak by treating confirmed cases and prophylactically protecting close contacts before spread escalates.
"Only safe and effective broad-spectrum antiviral drugs that can effectively combat most viral infections will enable the world to defend the global population in the war against known and unknown nanoscopic enemies that are viruses," Diwan added. "NV-387 is the only drug with this potential that is in clinical development today, to the best of our knowledge."
