Janus Electric Holdings Ltd (ASX:JNS) has kicked off a nationwide expansion of its heavy vehicle electrification platform, opening its first South Australian conversion centre in partnership with Archer Heavy Equipment and signalling a shift towards scaled deployment.
The new facility marks the company’s first dealer-led conversion hub in Australia, complementing its existing headquarters in Fountaindale, NSW, and forming the foundation of a broader network aimed at accelerating diesel-to-electric truck conversions across the country.
Initial capacity at the Archer site is expected to reach around 50 truck conversions in its first year, with plans to ramp up to between 150 and 200 annually as demand builds.
Dealer network underpins national push
The South Australian launch represents more than a single-site expansion. It reflects a broader strategy to move from early-stage deployments to a distributed, dealer-led conversion network.
Janus Electric said it is in active discussions with potential partners across Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia, with further dealership agreements expected before the end of the year.
At the initial rollout stage, the emerging network is expected to deliver conversion capacity of at least 250 trucks per year, creating a base for scaling electrification across Australia’s freight fleet.
By integrating conversion capability with battery infrastructure and dealership partnerships, the company is aiming to move beyond isolated pilot projects towards coordinated, national deployment aligned with government funding priorities.
Chief executive Ben Hutt described the rollout as a turning point for the business.
“This is a genuine inflection point. We’re now building the infrastructure and capacity to electrify heavy transport at scale and in real operating environments,” he said.
Lower-cost pathway gains traction
Janus Electric’s model centres on converting existing diesel trucks rather than replacing them entirely, combining electric drivetrain retrofits with swappable battery systems.
The approach is designed to offer fleet operators a lower-cost alternative to purchasing new electric vehicles, while reducing fuel and maintenance expenses and enabling faster deployment timelines.
Heavy transport remains one of the more difficult sectors to decarbonise, with limited commercially viable solutions at scale. The company argues its platform provides a more practical pathway, particularly for operators managing cost pressures.
Freight currently accounts for roughly 30% of Australia’s diesel consumption, leaving the sector exposed to fuel price volatility and supply chain disruptions. Electrification offers a structural route to reduce that reliance.
Policy tailwinds — but gaps remain
The rollout comes amid increasing policy attention on decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, including recent funding through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s Driving the Nation program.
Janus Electric noted that while such initiatives are gaining momentum, further targeted incentives and coordination between federal and state governments will be needed to accelerate adoption.
The company has already secured early validation in the United States, with California government incentives of US$90,000 to US$120,000 per truck supporting initial conversions and demonstrating eligibility under established decarbonisation programs.
South Australia as a launchpad
South Australia was selected as the first rollout location in Australia due to its high penetration of renewable energy, which aligns closely with Janus Electric’s battery-swapping model.
The system allows batteries to be charged during periods of high renewable generation and deployed across freight operations, improving energy utilisation while supporting grid stability.
The company estimates operators could achieve energy cost reductions of 30% to 60% under the model, depending on usage profiles.
Operationally, the model also fits well with existing freight patterns. Janus Electric noted that around 80% of Australian heavy vehicles travel less than 200 kilometres per day on repeat routes, making them suitable for depot-based charging and battery swap systems.
Building momentum at home and abroad
The rollout builds on a growing base of activity across Australia and North America.
Janus Electric has converted 28 trucks to date, with more than 650,000 kilometres electrified and over 3,600 battery swaps completed. It also has 111 contracted conversions in Australia and is progressing early-stage deployments in the United States through a Californian dealer network.
With conversion capacity now expanding and dealership partnerships taking shape, the company is positioning its platform as a scalable solution in a sector increasingly under pressure to cut emissions without disrupting operations.
