AuKing Mining Ltd (ASX:AKN) has completed an initial airborne magnetics and LiDAR survey across a significant part of its Tundulu rare earths project in Malawi, marking the first on-ground activity since announcing the acquisition and setting up the next stage of exploration.
The drone-based program covered the 5-kilometre-diameter carbonatite intrusive complex, including the historically drilled Nathace Hill and other interpreted carbonatites on nearby topographic highs such as Makhanga Hill, Namuka Hill, Ichigwakalu Hill and Tundulu Hill.
Around 330 line-kilometres were flown over 10 days, with the survey designed to sharpen AuKing’s understanding of the project’s subsurface intrusive architecture, structural controls and topography. The company said this work should help refine drill targeting across the broader Tundulu alkaline-carbonatite system.

Data processing to guide drill targets
Processing and interpretation of the magnetic and LiDAR datasets have now been handed to an independent geophysical consultant, with final products including levelled magnetic data, 3D inversions and derived grids expected within seven to 10 days.
That work is feeding directly into planning for AuKing’s next drilling program. The company is combining new survey data with historical drilling and geological information to define final targets for both infill drilling and potential extensions of mineralised zones.
Discussions are already underway with a preferred drilling contractor, with AuKing aiming to begin drilling in May once interpretation is complete, targets are finalised and a drill rig is secured.
Community engagement underway
Alongside the technical work, AuKing said local community engagement has already begun and will remain a central part of activity at Tundulu. Initial consultations and formal approvals have started with community leaders, regulatory agencies, drilling and earthworks contractors, while planning is also progressing for site access, drill pad locations and broader logistics.

Consultation during the airborne survey has already involved local township residents, and an even greater level of engagement would be required as drilling preparations continue.
