Ocean Power Technologies secures US Homeland Security contract – ICYMI

Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NYSE-A:OPTT) earlier this week outlined rapid progress in deploying its power and monitoring systems, as CEO Philipp Stratmann highlighted accelerating demand for ocean security solutions in an interview with Proactive.

Stratmann said the company had moved from contract award to deployment with the US Homeland Security Department, delivering its first operational system in less than four months. He added that additional systems are already in the pipeline, with a second unit nearing installation and a third on the way, while data streaming has commenced.

Stratmann said this approach allows Ocean Power Technologies Inc to quickly convert customer demand into deployed, operational systems, which in turn supports revenue recognition as backlog is delivered.

He emphasized that backlog execution remains a key driver of financial performance, noting that timely deployment is essential to avoid capital being tied up in inventory, and explained that moving systems into operation is what ultimately enables the company to recognise revenue.

Looking ahead, Stratmann pointed to increasing global demand for persistent maritime monitoring, driven by both geopolitical developments and commercial needs. He said that heightened attention on key waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz has reinforced the importance of real-time data and surveillance capabilities.

Importantly, he noted that demand is expanding beyond traditional defence customers. Stratmann said industries including insurance, port operations, and infrastructure management are increasingly seeking reliable monitoring solutions. He described this shift as evidence that ocean security is no longer a niche concern but a broader global priority.
