Barclays (LON:BARC) has announced that its departing deputy chairman will stay at least until the bank appoints a new chief executive.
It emerged on Wednesday that Mike Rake was leaving Barclays to become the chairman of payment group Worldpay.
The bank initially said Rake would continue as the bank's deputy chairman and senior independent director "at least until the end of 2015".
But on Thursday it issued a statement saying Rake would stay in place until Barclays had found a new chief executive.
It announced last week that former chief executive Antony Jenkins was leaving.
Barclays said in its statement: "Sir Michael Rake will continue to serve on the Barclays boards as deputy chairman and senior independent director until such time as a new group chief executive is in post, John McFarlane has reverted to the role of non executive chairman and a replacement senior independent director is in place."
Rake, who is also the chairman of telecoms group BT (LON:BT.A), is understood to have told Barclays' chairman McFarlane of his decision last week.
McFarlane has taken on the role of chief executive while Barclays searches for Jenkins' successor.
Jenkins took over the top role at Barclays after Bob Diamond and other former executives left in the wake of the financial crisis and subsequent scandals.
Worldpay, owned by Advent International and Bain Capital, is said to be preparing a possible £6bn listing on the London stock market later this year.
Barclays shares rose 2.65p to 280.7p in mid-morning trading in London.
