Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS, XETRA:WDP) is preparing to cut as many as 1,000 jobs in the coming weeks, mostly from its marketing division, according to The Wall Street Journal, as the company navigates declining box office revenue and rising competition from streaming rivals.
The planned reduction is one of the first major personnel moves under new CEO Josh D’Amaro, who took the helm last month.
Sources told WSJ the layoffs were planned before D’Amaro assumed leadership.
Disney has already eliminated more than 8,000 positions since 2022, following a broad restructuring initiated under former CEO Bob Iger. At the end of its 2025 fiscal year, the company employed 231,000 people, around 80% of whom work in its experiences division, which includes theme parks and consumer products.
Shares of Disney fell 0.9% in Thursday morning trading.
