VivoPower CIO on sovereign AI infrastructure opportunity

VivoPower CIO on sovereign AI infrastructure opportunity

VivoPower PLC (NASDAQ:VIVO, FRA:51J) chief investment officer Alex Cuppage talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the growing importance of sovereign AI and how countries are increasingly prioritising their own AI infrastructure. In conversation with Proactive, Cuppage explained why sovereign AI has become a strategic focus for governments and how it could reshape global competitiveness in the coming decades.

Cuppage described sovereign AI as a framework where nations define how artificial intelligence is deployed across government, industry, healthcare, education and defence. He explained that AI will influence nearly every aspect of modern life and could even reshape geopolitical dynamics as countries adopt the technology at different speeds.

During the discussion, Cuppage noted that VivoPower focuses on enabling the infrastructure required to support sovereign AI initiatives. The company works with governments to permit land, supply energy, and design and build data centres that can support AI workloads. As Cuppage put it, “AI is going to infiltrate every single part of human life, from government verticals, industry verticals, education, health care, defence.”

He also highlighted that many governments are increasingly focused on data sovereignty and national security, particularly as sensitive information is often hosted by major hyperscale cloud providers. Cuppage emphasised that AI infrastructure is becoming a long-term strategic asset for countries.

The conversation also touched on opportunities for emerging economies. According to Cuppage, nations with abundant natural resources such as hydropower and water may still be able to develop competitive AI infrastructure with the right vision and partnerships.

For countries seeking to build sovereign AI capability, Cuppage said the biggest challenges are “capital, talent and finding the right partners.”
