UBS says Rentokil investor feedback broadly positive following upgrade to buy

UBS has shared the key investor debates following its recent upgrade of Rentokil Initial PLC (LSE:RTO) to 'buy', with a 12-month price target of 540p, implying upside of around 11% from the current share price of 488p.

The Swiss bank upgraded the pest control and hygiene services group on the basis that a reshaping of its North American pest control strategy could inflect volumes over the next 12 months, supporting what UBS described as the re-emergence of a valuable long-term compounder.

Investor feedback has been broadly constructive, with most agreeing that the strategic pivot can stabilise market share in North America and that Rentokil's strong position in a defensive core market is an asset given the volatile macroeconomic environment.

The new strategy broadly aligns Rentokil with the playbook successfully deployed by US rival Rollins, with a focus on branch and brand-level operations and the use of lower-cost satellite branches to strengthen the company's footprint and lead generation capacity.

Some investors have suggested that UBS's own estimates for branch opening costs may still be too conservative, implying the expansion programme could prove even more capital-efficient than the bank currently models.

The main area of pushback centres on whether the strategic shift is sufficient to return the North American business to market-level growth over time, and whether new chief executive Mike Duffy, who assumed the role on 16 March, will push for higher growth investments that could weigh on margins.

UBS said it expects the new chief executive to invest more in growth but believes incremental costs will remain relatively contained, though its scenario analysis deliberately accounts for a wider range of potential outcomes under his leadership.

Investors will be watching closely for any signals that Duffy might pursue a significantly larger branch network or step up marketing support for the Terminix brand, which has historically underperformed Rentokil's regional brands in North America and remains a source of uncertainty for the long-term growth outlook.

A key near-term test will be the first-quarter update on 16 April, where UBS forecasts North American pest services organic growth of 2.6% year-on-year, broadly in line with the fourth quarter.

A fuller strategic update from the new chief executive is expected at the half-year stage, which UBS regards as the more significant moment for investors assessing the trajectory of the turnaround.
