Intel to increase investment in SambaNova, expanding AI partnership

Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC, XETRA:INL) plans to invest an additional $15 million in AI chip startup SambaNova Systems, according to a Reuters review of corporate records, as the semiconductor company deepens its focus on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The proposed investment, which is subject to regulatory approval, would raise Intel’s ownership stake in SambaNova to approximately 9%.

This follows a $35 million investment made in February 2026, which increased Intel’s stake to 8.2% from 6.8% the previous year.

The companies announced a broader “strategic collaboration” in February, aimed at advancing large-scale, efficient AI computing. SambaNova develops chips and software designed for AI training and inference, areas seen as critical to expanding data center and cloud capabilities.

The additional funding underscores Intel’s efforts to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive AI sector, where demand for specialized computing hardware has grown rapidly.

The relationship between the two firms has also drawn some scrutiny. SambaNova is chaired by Lip-Bu Tan, who serves as Intel’s chief executive officer, raising potential corporate governance considerations.

Neither company has publicly commented on the latest investment.

Shares of Intel traded down about 1.3% at $47 in early trade on Thursday.
