Amazon.com Inc has said two Amazon Web Services data centres in the United Arab Emirates were hit by drone strikes, with another facility in Bahrain damaged by a nearby attack, as Iran retaliated to the strikes by the US and Israel.
Joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran started over the weekend, resulting in the reported death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with Iran's response including missile and drone attacks across the region. Fighting continued on Tuesday.
AWS said the strikes caused “structural damage” and “disrupted power” to its infrastructure.
It warned customers in the Middle East to back up their data immediately and consider moving systems to other AWS regions because of the “unpredictable” operating environment.
As AWS provides cloud computing services to companies, governments and individuals, any sustained disruption could have knock-on effects for corporate systems and online services across the region.
The company said it was working to restore affected services but indicated repairs could take time, given the physical damage.
