Rentokil Initial PLC (LSE:RTO) has been downgraded from 'buy' to 'hold' at Deutsche Bank, with the target price cut from 505p to 465p.
Analysts frame the thesis carefully. Rentokil is a genuine global market leader in a defensive, structurally attractive category, and on paper, it should be compounding steadily.
The problem is that it is not keeping pace with its international peers on either growth or margins, and the gap is large enough to demand an explanation.
Deutsche's assessment concludes that Rentokil's pest control division is significantly under-earning relative to comparable businesses.
That finding, combined with an incoming chief executive whose priorities are not yet fully known, makes it difficult to underwrite a more constructive stance.
The central tension Deutsche identifies is a familiar one in turnaround situations: the investments most likely to fix organic revenue growth are also the investments most likely to pressure near-term earnings.
Until the new CEO sets out a credible plan, the upside is hard to quantify.
In morning trading, the shares were off 2% at 448.7p.
