Critical Resources brings in solid-state battery expert as lab validation begins - ICYMI

Critical Resources Ltd (ASX:CRR, FRA:9S70) earlier this week outlined the strategic appointment of globally recognised solid-state battery scientist Dr Alevtina (Alla) Smirnova as technical advisor, marking a key step as the company advances into structured laboratory validation of its optioned battery technologies.

Managing director Tim Wither said the appointment provides independent technical oversight as the company transitions from intellectual property access to milestone-driven validation work. He noted that Dr Smirnova, who is also associated with the US National Science Foundation’s Centre for Solid State Electrical Power Storage, brings deep expertise to support the next stage of development.

Wither explained that the company has commenced a six-month evaluation program covering two primary projects. The first centres on high-temperature solid-state electrolytes designed to eliminate flammable liquid electrolytes, targeting applications in demanding environments such as data centres, defence and mining operations.

Proactive: Welcome back to Proactive Investors. I host Kerry Stevenson. I’ve asked Tim Wither to join me again today. He is managing director of Critical Resources. The company has just appointed Dr Alevtina (Alla) Smirnova as a technical advisor. Tim, why is this important to the direction and forward momentum of Critical Resources?

Tim Wither: Dr Smirnova is a globally recognised leader in solid-state batteries. She is also director of the US National Science Foundation’s Centre for Solid State Electrical Power Storage. Her appointment provides independent technical oversight as the company transitions from accessing intellectual property into structured laboratory validation and potentially early-stage development.

Over the coming months, the focus will be milestone-driven work, materials optimisation, generating data and progressing towards an early prototype cell. The company will continue to update the market as progress is made.

Proactive: Did she approach the company or did the company approach her? Why is she involved with this particular project?

Tim Wither: Dr Smirnova is also the inventor of some of the intellectual property over which the company has secured an exclusive option. Although she has other intellectual property in sodium and lithium solid-state batteries, her focus remains on solid-state battery technology. She will help ensure continuity from research into this evaluation stage and support informed decision-making as the company progresses.

Proactive: How long will the evaluation stage take and what is the shareholder value proposition?

Tim Wither: The company has entered into a six-month program evaluating two projects. One is a high-temperature solid-state electrolyte project, aimed at removing flammable liquid electrolytes for applications in high-temperature environments such as data centres, defence and mining. The second is the DSD project, which involves 3D printing of the cathode and potentially the electrolyte.

Early trials of the 3D printing technology have been successful. The company is tackling both the electrolyte challenge and the manufacturing challenge, which remains one of the major hurdles in solid-state batteries.

Proactive: What is the upcoming news flow for Critical Resources?

Tim Wither: The company will provide regular updates on electrolyte work and the DSD project, including ongoing material testing and progression into cell performance work. Additionally, results from the maiden gold drilling campaign in New Zealand are expected very late February.
