Berkshire slashes Amazon stake, trims Apple, takes new position in New York Times

Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE:BRK.A) has sold more than three-quarters of its stake in Amazon and initiated a new investment in The New York Times, according to a regulatory filing released after market close Tuesday.

The conglomerate cut its Amazon holding by 77% in the latest quarter, reducing the position from 10 million shares to about 2.28 million shares. Buffett first acquired Amazon shares in 2019.

Berkshire also continued to trim its largest equity holding, Apple, lowering the stake by 4.3% in what marked the final quarter under Warren Buffett’s leadership. Despite the reduction, Apple remained Berkshire’s biggest stock holding at $61.96 billion. The iPhone maker has underperformed the broader S&P 500 over the past year.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based company additionally pared its investment in Bank of America by 8.9%, extending a pruning of major holdings that began in 2024.

In a notable new move, Berkshire bought roughly 3% of The New York Times’ shares, marking one of Buffett’s final major bets at the conglomerate. Buffett previously had deep ties to the newspaper industry, having been the largest outside shareholder and a board member of The Washington Post when it was publicly traded.

Shares of The New York Times rose in premarket trading following the disclosure but were flat by Wednesday morning.
