China’s SANY International Development and a group of unnamed South Korean companies have signed a deal to support feasibility studies for the proposed Western Green Energy Hub in south-east Western Australia.
Project developer Western Green Energy Hub said the agreement will fund early design work ahead of a final investment decision targeted for 2029.
The proponents are targeting production of about 330,000tpa of green hydrogen, which is expected to play a role in decarbonising hard-to-abate industries, despite recent cost and project-delivery headwinds across the sector.
The hub would be powered by about 6GW of combined wind and solar generation.
Western Green Energy Hub is being progressed by a development group led by InterContinental Energy, which is also behind the proposed Australian Renewable Energy Hub in the Pilbara, a project positioned around supplying energy for green iron.
The company also noted it has an existing memorandum of understanding with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) covering collaboration on early-stage development work, construction and potential offtake.
