Lung cancer diagnostic developer strengthens North American IP position for early detection test
Shares in Cizzle Biotechnology Holdings PLC (LSE:CIZ) rose 11% to 1.55p after the company secured a new patent in Canada covering its proprietary CIZ1B lung cancer biomarker test.
The UK-based diagnostics company said the patent, granted by the Canadian intellectual property office, protects its two-step test method using a fibrinogen capture agent.
The format, developed at the University of York, is already licensed to Cizzle Bio Inc for use in North America and the Caribbean.
Cizzle holds an existing patent in the United States and said a further application there is likely to be approved in due course.
The company also holds protection from the European Patent Office and is pursuing additional partnerships in the UK and Europe, including with the National Health Service.
The CIZ1B test is designed for early-stage lung cancer detection. It was developed by Professor Dawn Coverley, the company’s chief scientific officer and founder, with support from UK Research and Innovation and charitable funding.
Cizzle said the strengthened intellectual property position would enhance its commercial rollout, adding protection and value to its global licensing strategy.
The test is already being introduced through partnerships with clinical laboratories and hospitals in North America.
