Nvidia eyes record $20bn investment in OpenAI amid major funding round

Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA, XETRA:NVD) is reportedly close to finalising a $20 billion investment in OpenAI, which would mark its largest single outlay to date.

Cited in by Bloomberg, sources familiar with the matter said the deal is nearing completion but has not yet been finalised and may still change.

The investment is part of OpenAI’s broader fundraising effort, which aims to secure up to $100 billion, primarily from major technology firms.

Amazon has held talks to contribute up to $50 billion, while SoftBank is also exploring a stake of around $30 billion, according to earlier reports.

Nvidia and OpenAI have been central players in the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. However, their relationship has faced scrutiny following reports of internal reservations at Nvidia regarding the scale of the proposed investment.

A Wall Street Journal report indicated that a broader $100 billion funding plan had stalled due to internal concerns.

Despite this, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang reaffirmed the company’s commitment, describing OpenAI as a strong investment prospect.

Speaking in Taipei, Huang said Nvidia intends to take part in the upcoming funding round, calling it potentially “the largest investment we’ve ever made.”
