French authorities raided the Paris offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform X on Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged cybercrimes and platform violations.
The operation was carried out by the Paris prosecutor’s cybercrime unit with support from the French police and Europol, the Paris prosecutor's office said.
Authorities seized documents and data in connection with a probe that was initially opened in January 2025 over concerns about algorithm manipulation and unauthorized data extraction. The investigation has since expanded to examine alleged complicity in the distribution of child sexual abuse material, sexualized deepfakes, Holocaust denial content, and potential misuse of X’s AI chatbot, Grok.
The prosecutor’s office said that both Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino, who resigned in July 2025, have been summoned for voluntary questioning on April 20, 2026. Additional employees have been called as witnesses.
The prosecutor’s office said the investigation would look into “complicity in possession or organized distribution of images of children of a pornographic nature, infringement of people’s image rights through sexual deepfakes, and fraudulent data extraction by an organized group.”
The French inquiry follows a complaint from a lawmaker alleging that X’s algorithms could have distorted automated data processing and influenced content visibility.
X is yet to comment on the raid. It previously described the investigation as politically motivated and denied manipulating its algorithms.
