SoftBank reportedly in talks to increase OpenAI investment by $30B

SoftBank Group is in early-stage discussions to invest up to an additional $30 billion in OpenAI (Unlisted:OPAI), according to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Japanese technology conglomerate already holds an 11% stake in the artificial intelligence company, which has attracted significant investor interest as it continues to expand its AI offerings and commercial applications, including its ChatGPT platform.

The potential investment would be part of a larger fundraising effort by OpenAI, which is seeking up to $100 billion in new capital.

If completed, the round could value the company at as much as $830 billion.

SoftBank’s current stake follows a $22.5 billion commitment finalized in December 2025, part of a broader previous investment totaling around $41 billion.

The discussions over additional funding are preliminary, and the terms are subject to change, the WSJ reported.
