Amazon to lay off 16,000 employees in latest restructuring effort

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) said on Wednesday it will cut approximately 16,000 jobs across the company, a few hours after staff were told about the layoffs in an email sent by mistake.

This latest headcount reduction follows 14,000 cuts in October 2025, primarily at the corporate level.

Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, said in a memo to employees that the moves are intended to “strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.”

She added that the company is “working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted,” including offering most US-based employees 90 days to seek new internal roles.

The latest layoffs affect roughly 10% of Amazon’s white-collar workforce, which numbers around 350,000, while not impacting frontline warehouse and fulfillment staff. Teams across Amazon Web Services, Prime Video, retail operations, HR, and other US and India-based functions are included.

The company also announced plans to close some Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores, with certain locations expected to be converted into Whole Foods Market stores.

Galetti added that despite the reductions, Amazon will continue to hire and invest in strategic areas critical to its operations.
