Genus growth prospects look healthy, says broker

Genus PLC (LSE:GNS) should be a FTSE 100 company by the end of the decade, according to house broker Panmure Liberum.

In a recent update, the animal genetics group revealed that trading conditions had remained stronger for longer than anticipated, particularly in the PIC pork division.

Profit for the six months to December came in at around £50 million, excluding a £5.6 million milestone payment from BCA. The wider City consensus had been for about £43.8 million.

Genus's markets had been expected to soften in the second quarter but has continued to grow, while a surprise uptick in the ABS beef business has also supported performance, the analysts said.

Strong pork prices and lower feed costs further boosted returns from the group’s own farms.

Cost savings were better than expected cost savings from Genus’s VAP 3 programme and earlier-than-planned revenue from IntelliGen tech transfers.

The broker has raised its full-year profit forecast by 6% and described Genus as a high-conviction pick for 2026, with short-term growth driven by healthy markets and the medium-term by PRP, the groundbreaking genetically edited pig genes that are resistant to the devastating Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus.

"The recent update supports our short-term view and we would expect further news on PRP during the course of 2026," analysts told clients.

"We remain of the view that Genus is a multi-year growth story and that it stands a reasonable chance of being a FTSE 100 stock by 2030."
