BioVie Inc (NASDAQ:BIVI, NASDAQ:BIVIW) has completed enrolment in a closely watched mid-stage trial testing whether its experimental drug bezisterim can slow the progression of early Parkinson’s disease, putting the group on track for key data later this year.
The Phase 2 study, known as SUNRISE-PD, has enrolled 60 patients who were diagnosed within the past four years and have not yet been treated with standard levodopa therapy.
The trial is designed to assess both motor and non-motor symptoms, with results expected in the first half of 2026.
Unlike many Parkinson’s trials, SUNRISE-PD uses a hybrid, decentralised model. Patients can complete study visits either at home or in a clinic, a structure intended to reduce barriers linked to mobility, geography and access to specialist care. BioVie said the approach helped speed recruitment and improve participation.
Bezisterim is an oral drug that targets inflammation and insulin resistance, processes thought to contribute to neurological damage. Earlier trials showed that, when added to levodopa, the drug improved symptoms with a favourable safety profile.
The current study aims to determine whether bezisterim can deliver benefits on its own, earlier in the disease course.
The trial is part of a broader effort to reposition bezisterim across multiple conditions. BioVie is also running studies in Long COVID and Alzheimer’s disease, with further data expected through 2026.
